UTR, the internationally recognized tennis rating system based in the United States (represented in Japan by BearDown), and the Pickleball Japan Federation (PJ) have formed an official partnership.
As UTR continues to expand into the rapidly growing pickleball market in the United States, Japan officially launched the UTR-rated Pickleball Tour starting in 2025.
UTR evaluates players using its proprietary algorithm, assigning a rating from 0 to 16 based on match results. Participants in the UTR Pickleball Tour can use their rating to compare their performance with players worldwide.
This system allows players in Japan to measure their level against global standards. In tennis, UTR is widely recognized as an important benchmark for U.S. college recruitment and study-abroad opportunities. In pickleball, collegiate leagues have already been established in the United States — including at universities such as Colgate — and Japanese players will increasingly be able to use their UTR rating as a pathway toward pickleball scholarships and university admissions abroad. For recreational players as well, UTR ratings are expected to become an important selection criterion for participating in international tournaments and for earning opportunities such as USAP Golden Tickets.
