A New Step Forward as Japan’s Officially Recognized Governing Body for Pickleball

The Pickleball Japan Federation (Tokyo; Chairperson: Rika Riordan) is pleased to announce that it has been officially recognized by the Japan Sport Association (JSPO) following approval at the JSPO Regular Council Meeting held on June 24, 2026.

Japan Sport Association (JSPO)

This recognition formally establishes the Federation as the officially recognized governing body for pickleball in Japan and marks a significant milestone in the development of the sport nationwide.

It represents an important new chapter for pickleball in Japan and will further accelerate efforts to expand participation, strengthen competitive structures, and enhance athlete performance throughout the country.

The recognition reflects the Federation’s comprehensive efforts in promoting pickleball, organizing domestic and international competitions, developing athletes, coaches, and referees, improving playing environments, and strengthening organizational governance and compliance systems.

About Pickleball

Pickleball is a sport that combines accessibility and inclusiveness with a high level of athleticism and strategy. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages, backgrounds, experience levels, and nationalities on the same court, making it a unique sport that truly connects people.

As one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, pickleball continues to expand rapidly across communities, schools, businesses, local governments, sports clubs, and recreational facilities. Beyond its value as a lifelong sport that promotes health and wellness, pickleball is increasingly recognized for its ability to foster social connections and strengthen communities across generations.

Participation and interest in pickleball have also grown significantly throughout Japan in recent years, reflecting the sport’s increasing appeal and accessibility.

Future Initiatives

In April 2026, the Federation successfully completed the integration of Japan’s major pickleball organizations, establishing a unified national governing structure for the sport.

With JSPO recognition now secured, the Federation will further accelerate the development of pickleball throughout Japan by strengthening the national competitive infrastructure, establishing the Japan National Pickleball Championships, expanding junior development programs, enhancing training and support for Japan National Team athletes, supporting participation in international competitions, and creating pathways for Japanese athletes to succeed on the global stage.

The Federation will also continue to monitor international developments surrounding the sport’s rapid global growth and the long-term prospects of Olympic inclusion, while strengthening Japan’s international competitiveness and supporting the continued advancement of pickleball throughout the country.

At the same time, the Federation remains committed to balancing the development of pickleball as both a competitive sport and a lifelong sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Through transparent governance and a safe, inclusive environment for all participants, we aim to contribute to the healthy development of sport and the enrichment of society.

■Message from Chairperson Rika Riordan

“This recognition by the Japan Sport Association would not have been possible without the dedication and support of the athletes, coaches, referees, member organizations, volunteers, sponsors, local governments, and countless individuals who have worked tirelessly to grow pickleball throughout Japan.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this achievement.

Earlier this year, we successfully unified Japan’s major pickleball organizations. Today, we celebrate another important milestone as pickleball enters a new stage within the Japanese sporting landscape.

Pickleball is a sport that brings people together regardless of age, experience, gender, nationality, or disability. We are committed to preserving these values while creating more opportunities for people to experience the joy of sport and meaningful human connection. At the same time, we will continue building an environment in which Japanese athletes can compete and succeed at the highest international level.

This JSPO recognition also provides an opportunity for Japan to contribute not only to the development of pickleball domestically, but also throughout Asia and around the world.

As a member of the Executive Board of the Global Pickleball Federation (GPF), I am committed to helping Japan serve as a leader in the development of pickleball across Asia while acting as a bridge between Asia and the global pickleball community. Through these efforts, I hope to contribute to the continued growth of pickleball throughout the region and around the world.
